Hiking Arizona: My Camera’s First Sunrise Hike

It’s been a little while since I’ve written anything but things have been busy over here in Alec-land.

First, as you know, I bought a new camera and have been trying to document as much as I can. That, however, also means I need to edit photos which is time consuming ..and then you factor in that I have a computer that could be entering second grade. Then I moved my website to a new hosting platform which is why it looks a little different. I had some kinks to iron out but I think we’re good to go from here on out! Woo-hoo!

The first Phoenix hike post camera purchase was a sunrise hike of Piestewa Peak (formerly and more commonly known as Squaw Peak).

This gave me a great chance to test out the camera in different lights and luckily, I had my friend Dillon with me who is a pro at photography. (If you’re looking for graduation/wedding photos, give him a call.)

The hike itself was slow thanks to me stopping every 10 feet to snap a photo and figure out if I wanted to change shutter speed, aperture, or ISO. Confession, I still get confused about what the heck I’m doing.

Anyways, I feel the shots that I did end up taking and then toying with in Lightroom turned out pretty good but we’ve still got a looooong way to go.

One of the things I that didn’t come to mind when I bought this camera is how heavy it is while hiking. I mean, on a short hike like this one it’s not too bad but on a longer one, it’s could get tedious. (I’m now hesitant to take it on my 46-mile Rim-Rim-Rim endur-athon of the Grand Canyon next month.)

However, I’m looking to get a chest harness to lock the camera in so then it’s not flying all over the place as I’m walking. This one called Cotton Carrier looks like it’ll be a good fit – though the $120 price tag doesn’t make me feel superb.

I’ll check back in when I make a decision.
