Happy Earth Day from Under the Arizona Sky!

Happy Earth Day everyone!

I drove out late afternoon to do some hiking in the Superstition Mountains and then, after a quick snooze in my car, headed out under the clear skies to shoot my first Milky Way of 2020. It was fantastic. I mean, slightly eery as some nearby coyotes were howling, but otherwise all good.

A couple of weeks ago, I did the Massacre Falls Trail and figured a lot of the shots would line up nicely with the Milky Way. Once I got out there, I knew it was a great call.

I’m not sure what it is about the Milky Way, but it draws me in. In Phoenix, you can barely make out the stream of stars with your naked eye, but in the backcountry, away from all the lights, it’s the most beautiful thing you can witness.

Here’s some of the sky magic that took place.

I’d be remiss to not do some Earth Day messaging and talk about how you should not only follow Leave No Trace principles but also limit what you buy. In a world where we can get almost anything at any time on Amazon, we should all be more cognizant of buying materials simply to buy it.

I’m guilty. We’re all guilty. But the trash heaps aren’t going away any time soon and the best progress we can make is to decrease our materialism and reuse and repurpose what we can. (I know, I know, a lot harder than it seems.)

Also, register to vote. Then vote. Vote for pro-climate candidates and those who support science and policies that get us closer to a Green New Deal.
