The Pandemic Roadtrip – Day 12 – Sunset in Glacier at Avalanche Lake

Avalanche Lake. Glacier National Park. The Crown Jewel of the Continent.

After a busy Sunday, the gang slept in and took a slow morning at the campsite, enjoying the cool weather and green trees surrounding us. By early afternoon, we packed up and made our way towards Glacier and the expected line at the park entrance. We hoped we’d be allowed to go all the way in, but they closed the road at the foot of Lake McDonald. This forced us to hang out by the lake (oh-no) until they began allowing traffic to Avalanche Lake Campground later in the day.

With how crazy the parking situation was in Glacier with Going-to-the-Sun Road still closed off, we brought dinner with us and cooked it before heading to Avalanche Lake for sunset. A reminder for ya’ll, the sun doesn’t set until about 9:45 there so even with a 6:45 dinner, we had plenty of time to hike two miles in and then relax.

Glacier National Park Avalanche Lake Sunset

While Austin and I had been to Glacier before, no one in the group had been to Avalanche Lake yet. We were all excited to check out the sights and wee what was in store

It was really pretty. It wasn’t overwhelming, but it was definitely great.

We had a cloudless sunset which was a slight bummer, but the water began to glass over, giving us an amazing reflection. The gang still had a great time, shooting, modeling, and enjoying each other’s company.

As we headed down, the forest we hiked in got a bit dark and this hike is notorious for having bears on/around it. Due to this, the four of us were all at our most alert, singing songs, talking loudly, and clapping like concert-goers. Obviously, we all made it out alive and it was a good bonding experience.
