Kauai’s Na Pali Coast Boat Tour Review: Is it worth it?

For years, I’ve wanted to lay eyes on the natural beauty of Kauai’s Na Pali Coast. In April of 2025, I finally got my chance. No amount of social media posts or photos can do the place justice. You have to see it with your own eyes. And I believe doing it on a Na Pali Coast boat tour is the way to go.

For over an hour on the way there and back, you’ll get to enjoy the magnificent landscape that makes this such a hallowed and sacred ground to native Hawaiians.

While I believe this tour fully lives up to the hype, if you’re still wondering if a Na Pali Coast cruise tour is worth it, keep on reading. Hopefully, my photos and review will convince you to book a trip and explore the beauty of Kauai more deeply.

Is the Na Pali Coast Boat Tour Worth It?

After getting skunked out for the Na Pali Coast section of our doors-off helicopter ride, I needed a redemption to see the Na Pali Coast in all her glory. And my gosh, we got it! Seeing the towering, jagged green spires of the Na Pali Coast was one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen. I can honestly say it’s one of my most incredible experiences.

While a helicopter flight (also worth considering) costs $400 per person, this option is almost half the price. Additionally, it’s far longer, so you get significantly more bang for your buck.

So, yes, the Na Pali Coast Boat Tour is definitely worth it. As there are only two ways to see the coast: by boat and by plane, you don’t have a lot of options. But I’ll be honest, if your goal is mainly to coast, the cruise is the best way to enjoy it, as you’ll get far longer with the majestic views than you would through the air.

For our April trip, we took a sunset tour that included dinner. However, all the tour companies also offer morning snorkeling, which includes the Na Pali Coast. (In the summer months, they run an afternoon snorkeling and boat tour, too.)

If you’re on the fence and wondering if a Na Pali Coast cruise is worth it, cast that doubt aside. You’ll be head over heels on this trip and be so stoked you booked it.

Full Review of our Sunset + Dinner Na Pali Coast Boat Tour

It was our second-to-last day on Kauai, and we were debating whether to book this tour. Thankfully, we did. We ended up going with the latest tour we found, which checked in at 2:30 p.m. in Port Allen.

My fiancée and I were driving from Poipu, so it was a 30-minute drive. After checking in on time, we boarded the cruise just before 3:00 p.m., sat through the safety briefing, and soon we were on our way. But this is where it gets funny. We were hanging out, chatting, and all of a sudden, two huge waves crashed overboard and nearly soaked us. (The couple to our right were totally soaked!)

We were literally less than 300 yards from the harbor and had no idea that was going to happen. Talk about a wake-up call. Thankfully, the waves died down for a bit as we headed clockwise around the island.

This portion of the Na Pali Coast boat tour is the most benign. You’re just hugging the shore, and there’s honestly not a lot to see. I would estimate that the first 65 minutes didn’t have a lot of views. At the 90-minute mark, we were along the Na Pali Coast.

Sea Sickness

But this is also where the motion sickness hit our boat. One family had three of their five members throwing up at various points. Another gentleman near us was yakking off the back of the boat. I think there were more and plenty of people were uncomfortable.

The issue wasn’t so much the waves being crazy, though they were noticeable. The issue was that we were going head-on into them, creating harsh contact. Because once we turned around, there were no problems.

Thankfully, once we reached the 10/10 section of the Na Pali Coast, the boat had slowed down, and everyone was able to take a breath and soak in the incredible views.

For years, I have wanted to see the Na Pali Coast. The helicopter trip didn’t offer the expansive views I’d hoped for. But now, on the boat, we were able to see what makes this dramatic scene one of the best in the world.

It was in awe. The spires jutting up from the coastline to the heavens; the mini waterfalls flowing into the ocean; the vibrant colors of green, red, and orange – utterly spectacular.

For the next hour, we were slowly moving along the Na Pali coast. The harsh waves were behind us, and we were peacefully staring up at a view I’d longed for for so long.

Dinner and Sunset

Once we bade goodbye to the majestic and rugged coastline, they began serving dinner. It consisted of pulled pork, chicken, rice, and Caesar salad. It wasn’t anything fancy, but quite yummy. After the jostling ride out there, I think most on board didn’t feel the need for a fancy dinner.

Forty-five minutes later, as the sun began to set, the captain put the boat in neutral, and we all watched the sun drop below the clouds covering the horizon. Beautiful hardly grasps the view and vibes.

Far off in the distance, three humpback whales exhaled and blew mist 15 feet into the air as they began their annual journey from the warm Kauai waters to the nutrient-rich waters of Alaska.

Once the light began to fade, the captain powered the catamaran back up, and we were headed back to the dock with smiles all around.

What was included in the boat tour

For our tour fee, we received a Luau dinner (including chicken, pork, rice, and Caesar salad), water, unlimited alcoholic drinks (on the way back), plus soda or juice. The staff was also incredibly friendly and helpful, and made sure to come around offering refills as needed.

Once you consider that most meals in Kauai will cost $20-$35 and drinks are another $15 each, you definitely get your money’s worth on the trip.

What should you bring on the cruise?

Here’s what I’d recommend for your sunset and dinner boat tour.

Photography Tips: Shooting from a boat

Shooting from a boat isn’t too tricky if you’re in calm waters. I initially tried to photograph during the bumpy times, but I just stopped. There was no point, as my camera was pointing in one direction and then in a vastly different direction the next second.

That said, if you are trying to photograph on a moving vessel, I recommend bumping your shutter speed up to at least 1/1,000. This will help reduce any blurring caused by the boat’s movement.

Once the boat stops moving, you shouldn’t need to do much to land a crisp shot.

Do the tour in a raft and be closer to the water.

What Lens to Bring

I suggest bringing a 24-70mm or a 24-105mm. This will allow you plenty of wide-angle shots, but also the ability to zoom in on the spires of the Na Pali Coast. I brought my 16-35mm and my 70-200mm lenses, but didn’t pull them out.

One thing to note

I should note that you are not actually on the Na Pali Coast at sunset. I was really hoping a boat tour would do this, but logistically, I think there’s too much risk in driving at night. It’s unfortunate because seeing this area with the sunset light on it would be impeccable!

Final Tip

If your camera does get splashed with sea water, take a damp rag when you get home and wipe down your camera and lens. Salt water can corrode the gear, and removing it helps extend the gear’s longevity.

The Best time to do the Na Pali Coast Boat Tour?

You can do the Na Pali Coast boat tour year-round, but during Hawaii’s winter months, the trade winds create more choppy conditions on the water. This is especially true in the afternoon and evenings, which is why they don’t run afternoon snorkeling tours in the winter and spring.

The crew told me that in June, the winds shift, and the southwest side of the island sees far less wind and more favorable conditions.

Final Thoughts on If The Kauai Na Pali Coast Boat Tour is Worth It?

There’s no disagreement that the Na Pali Coast is one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. Its features will astound you, with jagged spires, towering peaks, and lush valleys tucked behind the waves crashing onto shore.

The Na Pali Coast boat tour is incredibly worth it and one of the best tours you can take on Kauai. For the price, I think it’s the best, considering what you get to see and how you’ll get a meal, plus all the drinks you can consume.

If you do book an adventure, you’re in for a treat that will create memories you’ll never forget.

Until next time, adventurers, stay safe.
