The Pandemic Roadtrip – Day 6 – Yellowstone National Park + More Animals

With dreary weather still hanging over the area, we headed to Yellowstone National Park to check out the sights and make try good use of the subpar conditions.

Thanks to the holiday weekend bearing down on us, traffic through the South entrance was a parking lot. Finally, we got through and made our way towards Old Faithful (though we didn’t stop there).

Morning Glory and Grand Prismatic

In a light mist, Austin and I headed to Morning Glory, a colorful hot spring located in the Biscuit Basin area. At two-miles roundtrip, it was a nice way to wake up the legs after two-plus hours in the car.

After a quick food break (PS: our meal schedules have been weird…eating breakfast at 11… dinner at 9:30), we drove the short distance towards the Fairy Falls trailhead and eventually the Grand Prismatic overlook.

Animals!

Yellowstone is one of the most natural of all the National Parks and due to this, provides an amazing place to watch and photograph wildlife. Nearly everyone will see Bison grazing in the Lamar and Hayden Valley’s, but seeing bears, wolfs, foxes, or moose are a little more challenging. We spotted two bears as the daylight began to fade – but none of the other animals made an appearance.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

We wrapped up the day by visiting the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. You can drive to both sides of the canyon – and we did just that. When I was here last year, the north side was being worked on so it was nice to get to see that angle. The view from Artist’s Point is pristine and gives you a complete view of the canyon.

We didn’t get back to our hostel until after midnight, but it was well worth it to spend the day in Yellowstone. The weather has luckily cleared up and we’ve been able to get out and hike around the Tetons. Those days are coming soon, as I’m behind due to long days and no service to upload photos.

Until next time adventurers, take care and be safe.
