Known as the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World,” it offers some of the best fishing in the world, with abundant runs of salmon, halibut, and other species. In addition to fishing, there are plenty of other outdoor activities to enjoy, including bear-watching, kayaking, hiking, and wildlife photography. The things to do in Homer are immense, and you’ll love every second!

I spent two nights and three days here, camping on the Homer Spit one evening and then another in a tiny house due to rainy weather. The fresh seafood was excellent, the views were superb, and I could have stayed there for a long time.

First things first. Homer, Alaska, is most definitely worth visiting. With an incredible amount of outdoor activities to embark on, you won’t get tired of the scenery. (Maybe the weather, though.) You’ll be incredibly impressed by the views driving in, the activities, and the things to do in Homer.

When is the best month to visit Homer, Alaska?

If you want to maximize the Things to do in Homer, you will want to visit in July, August, or September. These months will give you the best weather and the most freedom to adventure. So check out these activities below to get out around Homer.

Is Homer or Seward better?

This is a great question. If you can spend the money, getting to Katmai National Park or Lake Clark is incredible and super easy from Homer. However, if you’re looking for less travel, Seward offers a magnitude of things to do. Additionally, the Kenai Fjords boat cruise is hard to beat as my favorite activity of our Alaska trip.

What is there to do between Seward and Homer?

There is a ton to do on the Kenai Peninsula. Make sure to stop in Cooper Landing and do these four adventures. On top of the things to do, the drive is beautiful.

How long is the drive from Anchorage to Homer?

The drive from Anchorage to Homer is around four hours if you do it in one push. More realistically, it will take six hours with bathroom stops and scenic views!

I want to go bear-watching. Where should I leave from?

There are a few different places to launch from. We left from Homer, and it was about an hour-long flight to Chitina Bay in Lake Clark National Park. Other flights leave from Soldotna, Kenai, or Anchorage. Of the things to do in Homer, I loved the bear-watching experience the most!

Fishing Near Homer

Fishing in Homer is a must-do for any angler. The Homer Spit, a long, narrow strip of land extending into Kachemak Bay, is home to several charter boats that offer guided fishing trips. Whether an experienced angler or a first-timer, these charters will take you to the best spots for catching halibut, salmon, and other fish.

In addition to charter boats, there are plenty of opportunities for shore fishing along the Spit.

And then, along the same lines, there’s so much good seafood to eat in the city. Our favorite restaurant was Capitan Pattie’s Fish House. If you leave hungry, there’s something wrong! So if you get bored and start wondering what to do in Homer, think fish, and you’ll be set!

Bear Watching in the National Parks

Bear-watching is my favorite thing to do in Homer, Alaska. (You can’t technically do it in the city limits, though.) With Lake Clark National Park and Katmai National Park only a quick flight away, you can see majestic coastal brown bears in their natural habitat.

These tours are led by experienced guides who know how to view bears safely and will help you get the best photos possible. Yes, these can be pricey, but they are unimaginably impressive.
